Gas Safety Check for Correct Operation and Installation

Gas Safety Check for Correct Operation and Installation

Having taken all other safety factors into account the engineer will also consider how the appliance operates. The engineer will also consider the gas safety check correct operation and insatallation

An essential part of this check is the amount of gas being supplied to and being used by the appliance.

The engineer will ensure that there is the correct gas pressure from the meter at the appliance. This is known as the Standing Pressure. If the Standing Pressure is too low it can be evidential that the gas pipe size is too small or there is a blockage in the pipe work. It may also be because there is a fault on the meter regulator.

Gas Safety Check for Correct Operation and Installation

On older appliances the engineer would also check the burner pressure at the gas valve whilst the appliance was running. This is an indication of the gas pressure/flow at the point of combustion.

On more modern appliances the engineer will check the operating pressure of the appliance usually whilst running at maximum rate this measure the pressure of the gas flow on the inlet to the boiler. This is done in conjunction with an additional check on the gas consumption of the appliance known as the Gas Rate.

The Gas rate is the amount of gas consumed per hour by the appliance which is these days expressed in M3/Hour. The gas rate is calculated by the engineer by taking readings from the gas meter.

The pressures and rates should meet the manufacturers specifications and regulatory standards.

The engineer will also consider other aspects of the appliance.

Particularly apparent is poor condition. If the appliance is in poor condition and maybe rusty this is usually sign of poor or no maintenance and the engineer is likely to give the appliance much more scrutiny while conducting a gas safety check looking at correct operational installation.

Failure for appliance safety devices to meet gas safety check may result in various levels of action depending upon the severity of the problem.
